Default S40 1.6 Diesel, 2007 cutting out / Reduced power

My 2007 S40 1.6 diesel is cutting out when revved hard.

This problem started about 6 weeks ago. I notice the car was going into reduced power (not limp mode), it would not rev above 3000 revs. I took the car to the garage and the mechanic put in on the computer and got a low fuel pressure code.

Following this he replaced the sensor on the common rail. The issue appeared to be resolved for a few weeks but started to happen again.

I took the car back to the mechanic and he tells me it is giving a low fuel pressure code again.

Right now the car is behaving in the following way.

if i start the car without driving it, i can rev it to the red line above 5000 revs as much as i want and it will not go into reduced power.

If i start the car and drive it without exceeding 2600 revs it will not go into reduced power mode.

the problem occurs if i'm driving and rev the car past 2600 revs it will go into reduced power mode (then the car will not rev past 3000 revs and will have less power when compared to driving below 2600 revs)

If i drive and rev hard (i.e. floor it) the car will cut out completely. The car has no warning lights or messages to indicate the problem.

Once I turn the car fully off and back on it will go back to normal.

If anyone has any suggestions as to what could cause this problem I would be thankful.

P.S I have checked the EGR valve and it is clean. I've cleaned the Mass flow sensor. I've checked for cracked or leaking pipes.

The first thing to do is change the fuel filter then try it .. or you may have a split turbo boost air pipe .. see how you get on .. do you get hissing noises just before it looses power ?

Thanks Clan

I had ruled out the fuel filter, given that the car can rev out to 5000 revs while standing, without any hint of a problem.

With regard to hissing, there is no hiss that i have noticed.

the engine uses much less fuel by revving to 5000 with no load than revving to even 1500 under load ...

Changed the fuel filter yesterday, and the car is like new. Thanks Clan for your help

P.S one interesting side effect of this problem, because I was forced to use lower revs over the last 600 Km I notice my litres per 100km has gone below 5.0 normally over a full tank i would only get 5.3 l/100km. The moral of the story:- a car that gives you a pain in the ass is greener.

oh well done :-) it is a small problem in UK , algae developing within the fuel system restricting the filter before it is due to be changed , i guess your fuel is probably different over there though ..

I have exactly the same problem on my V50 (1.6 D). Your description fits it perfectly. One guy at a garage said it may be dirty injectors - so I bought some injector cleaner and put it in the fuel. Time will tell. Did you completely solve your problem by changing the fuel filter. It is just that I change mine about 10000 miles ago, and my Haynes manual says it should be a 37000 mile change interval. - comments welcome.

Just changed the filter and it has worked, - no more cutting out under load! - when I took the top off the old filter, I could see loads of crud inside it - presumably there must be some dodgy fuel around
