Hello my Volvo friends....
I am really about to give up on my lovely xc70. Today i got inside the car and.....key wont turn. After a play it did. I used wd/40 , gearbox oil to oil it and still , for me to start the car i need to play with the key for a few minutes.
I love my car but its crazy its a new thing every day.
So steering lock they say.....is there any way to fix it or by pass the lock?
Many Thanks

Have a read of this to determine whether it is the relocker pin.

Not good, but don't give up. It's the joy of user car ownership that once you fix most of the problems you will have a great car at the end that you love.

So the issue is with the ignition barrel?

Yes, there is. Remove it.

Install a switch instead. I used one like this after my Cavalier was nicked in the '90s. The car wasn't worth the expense of a new steering lock and barrel and everything.

You need to use both poles, as it's quite a lot of current. I tried a single pole version, but it overheated quite quickly. And of course the neon won't light up for DC, but that doesn't matter.

If you really care, you can install another one for the ancilliaries, I did that with a freind's stolen-recovered Escort.

Then afte that, you just need a push-to-make to operate the starter. Take your pick from this lot.

Find somewhere to drill 'em into your dashboard. I mounted a round push-to-make in one of the screw holes for the steering column shroud. It was ever-so funny watching the police try to figure out how to start it!

Well...latest news.....
Thank you for your answers and help and motivation. Its very important.

Well...put some drops of gear oil and inserted several times and it didnt work. so i give it a rest. Wile ago i went to try again and if you insert the key and first just give it a touch to the 0 position and then turn it ...IT WORKS. even with or without the steering locked!!!!!!

I guess it was dry????? or is something about to go for good???

Once again THANK YOU for the kind words and solutions. I hope it solved if not i saved all your solutions.

Many Thanks

I LOVE MY XC70!!!

As a caution for future problems it helps to turn a little the steering at the moment the key is turned, so as to release the force on the steering lock while turning the key.

Well if its any consolation I had a similar experience for the first 6 months of ownership of our XC70. I've never had a car before that kept throwing up problem after problem. Its now proving relaible motoring and just sailed through the MOT. MInd you, I do need to strip the turbo in the spring :-)
