This kind of thing will come under a standard price scheme, they'll do it at the same sort of price at all the dealerships.

Remember though that your options are:

a) Brim the tank with diesel and hope that you suffer no damage
b) Call a 2man in a van" or the AA/RAC out to drain the tank, purge the system, and potentially invalidate your warranty (Untrained to work on the fuel system, etc)
c) Take it to Volvo, have them fix it
d) ?????
e) Profit.

Many people have done this across marques.

There are specialists out there that charge as little as £100, think I recall a Halfords advert at £150 whilst AA/RAC charge ~£200.

Given it sounds as if the vehicle was static, I would probably not even bother with fuel filters and lines flush???

Its always recommended to drain petrol out of diesel....However......

Some years ago I put around £12 worth of petrol (which then would have been about 15/16 litres) into a diesel car. (I year old 52 reg btw 12k miles).
Realised my mistake and filled the rest of the tank with diesel

The petrol station said "do not start it it will ruin it"

Said thanks....chewed it over....and made my choice guided by and based on my own thought and feeling !!!!!

So....started it up...ran fine......circled the outskirts of the city for about 2 hours filling up every half an hour with more diesel to strengthen the diesel/petrol ratio.....no probs at all or ever....in fact the car never ran better and quieter.....and got rid at 60k miles...no engine probs at all....

Regards

Dealer is normally quite good so I will sort it with them and will not name them.
I am trying to understand if it is a volvo recommendation or dealer group recommendation.

Would have been cheaper to fill up rest of the way with diesel, you would not have had any problems, doh mate

i would have probably taken the chance with 12 litres too, but then i suppose when you're on a busy forecourt, making a decision quickly, and thinking if it goes wrong it could wreck the engine and cost £3-4k to replace, i bet a fair number of people would go on the side of caution, even if it meant calling the AA.

I did this with my last D5 XC90 in 2008 i think and my local Volvo garage charged me £400 at that time.

My wife recently put 3 litres of diesel in her petrol car (I know it's not supposed to be possible but she managed) and fortunately she called me so I trundled out with a jerry can of petrol and brimmed the tank. Been topping it up since to dilute it with no I'll effects.

I believe we have got away with it because it only amounted to a 5% contamination and at that ratio it probably helped clean the engine.

Any contamination ratio greater than 10% is always going to be risky, especially when putting petrol in a diesel engine due to pre ignition and reduced lubrication.

Happened to me when I was a passenger in one of my own vehicles, my driver had actually put £20 of petrol in a diesel berlingo and drove for maybe 8 miles before it packed in, funnily enough right outside a shell, RAC man towed us in and we topped up with diesel, he then got the thing started and away we went, really the RAC man should have called out their "specialists" but I was happy to take his advice (off the record of course because they normally charge £200 to sort this kind of thing) and get on our way.

Our good friend here has been shafted imo and I feel for him

Have just checked fuel prices in 2002 and based on the price I must have put in around 4 gallons of petrol in a diesel.(around 30%)

I took what I considered a calculated risk based on a pretty complacent thought process really of "que sera sera"

I was worried whilst driving about, a bit nerve racking although all was well in the end.

Its recommended however to drain any petrol form a diesel
