Default oil leak (serious) on 960

A work collegue has a 960, when the engine is running it is a serious drip, drip, drip from above the oil drain plug at back of the engine.
when the engine is off and sump wiped dry there is no oil. There is no oil comming from the back of the head.
He has recently (two days ago) had a new sump gasket put on when it was dripping a small amount, the amount that would not bother most of us, but now it is 100 times worse.
i wonder if the original leak was somthing else and not the sump gasket, which has realy blown big style.
the car has done 116000mls any ideas

Default RE: oil leak (serious) on 960

I had a minor leak from the rear of my engine. At first I thought that it was a crack in the sump but then realised that it was coming from higher up. I took it into my dealer and nearly £300 later it was sorted - rear crankshaft oil seal. From what I have read these appear to be a weakness. Mind you, my old 120 had the same problem but I fixed that myself.

I believe that they only leak when the engine is running because of the positive pressure in the crankcase.

All the best.

First clean the PCV system with carb/intake cleaner. Next add 0.5L of synthetic ATF to the engine oil. This will help cure minor leaks by revitalising the rubber seals. I also cleans and revives sticky hydraulic tappets and piston rings so improves many things. It may stop the leak from your rear crank oil seal, it may not but either way will help with the other stuff.

Also what oil is being used in the engine?

Must be a pretty serious oil leak to be still leaking 18 years on...

Bet his chassis has stayed rust-free, though, with 18 years of oil spray!!

Yes, but how many accidents involving motorcyclists has it caused! Lol!
