Default Fuel consumption

After driving my 960 back from Scotland, a distance of 200 miles, I used just under half a tank of fuel - Some quick (very rough) calculations give me approx 7.9 gallons of fuel used, which is just over 25mpg...

A large part of the journey was done at over the legal limit, so I consider that to be a pretty amazing figure! I only expected 25 mpg if I treat it with a very gentle right foot!

Cool

Cool.

smoothness is often more an issue than speed. Gathering momentum is often pretty economical.

Thats a lot more than I get from my 960 ........but its worth it for the quality of car you can get for such little money.

I find it is speed that is the killer. I also did a Scotland holiday last year with older driver in another car and was restricted to 50 most of the time.

Think I managed over 30mpg, normally don't expect more than 26mpg on long journeys in my 940 2.3 HPT estate.

For max economy with a turbo you need to be getting a little boost - probably 2,500-3,00 rpm is the most economical.

In my 1996 960 3Ltr 24v I normally get around 30mpg on a long run with the cruise control set at the speed limit (70mph on the motorway) and with the climate control working continuously (having the climate control running does increase the fuel consumption). Obviously, all fuel guages differ, but if I set out with a full tank I normally reckon on getting to anywhere between 250-280 miles by the time the needle gets down to the half-tank mark on the guage.

The last long run I did in the 940 I estimate approx. 30mpg, that was 4 up and a full load of camping gear and roofbox.
The return journey from north wales was one third `A` roads and two thirds M.way at 77mph (that`s using the satnav - 70mph + 10% `leeway`, 370 miles.
I always try to keep below 3000rpm.
I usually use the tacho, rather than the speedo to control road speed, and to keep it below 2500. Lock out tends to give about 2000rpm, so that is probably the most economical engine speed.
The autobox seems to prefer acceleration so I tend to release the throttle a bit to make it change up.
If fuel economy is too high, apart from mechanical issues, try not to be `pushed` by other drivers, who usually seem to treat road use as some kind of race.
Accelerate smoothly away from stop, keeping the revs below 2500rpm.
Get into top as soon as the engine will allow which will be later than the **** in his Saxo but before too long you will sail past him. His cruising speed is only about 60-65. A refined car like the Volvo will cruise effortlessly at 80mph.
A final reminder - speed is usually blamed for `incidents` but it is the way speed is `used`- fast, aggressive. acceleration is much more likely to create a `high energy` collision, these are the type that do the most damage.

I'm experimenting with different brands of fuels, but i must say i get around 25-30 miles to the gallon on a good run, and can be anything around 15-20 when stuck in town traffic.. leaded 4 star when i can get it generally improves my mileage all round..but like i say..when i can get it

Hey Mike, are you saying that boost just above zero gives max economy?
I always thought it was max vacuum + 5th gear. Am I wrong?

BTW, I am getting 26-27 mpg mixed driving.

Cheers
