Default New XC60 - UK v USA

I'm about to take delivery of a new XC60 next week and while trying to register a Volvo ID inadvertently ended up on Volvo’s UAS website so just for fun configured an XC60. I expected some regional differences but was quite shocked as to the spec level of a USA car as compared to a UK one.

The USA version of the same Inscription model had as standard the following extra equipment:

Panoramic sunroof
Rear park assist camera
Harmon Kardon premium sound & Apple carplay/android
Blind spot info system
4 zone AC
Electric folding rear headrests

I may have missed a few other minor differences but you will see from the above that this is a considerable list of extras. Just the first 4 items in the Uk would cost almost an additional £3K! Oh and the price for the USA car was $50,000 which is just under £40K whereas the UK model costs at least £44k so another £4k difference in favour of the USA.

Is this just another example of rip of Britain, charge what you can get away with?

It has ever been so!
We just accept it rather than tell them to stuff it.

Since Volvo target large Volvos at the company car market they get away with it.

Whilst it's generally accepted that we pay more overall, the US prices won't include State Sales Tax as this varies from state to state.

Also, US cars may not get everything we do as standard; eg their base models have halogen headlamps and Adaptive Lighting isn't fitted to any cars as it's not approved for use in the US.

Same for many other car brands I've heard (via youtube reviews etc).

Audi notorious for a huge list here, but in the US there "trims" have a ton more stuff as standard.

Sucks that it's this way to be honest as lots of people won't pay for the extra features making the used market which I shop in more annoying!!

UK cars come with 20% VAT included plus a very hefty first registration tax [for cars over £40k list]
Even so UK cars are far cheaper than in many other countries.
Plus the Pound has lost 20% of its value or more against the Dollar, for obvious reasons, over the last three years, which skews your figures radically.

When we lived in the USA you could buy a Sunderland, UK built Nissan Note, (called nissan versa note) for $6999 + taxes (approx 7%), which at the time was £4400, by comparison in the uk the car was selling for £12000 new....

Configure a same car on Volvo Cars France (or even worse- Denmark, Norway, etc) and you'll see that the UK prices are not that bad actually.

I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee WK in the US a few years ago, retailed for $40k. Bought one in the UK, specced in the same way, except for the diesel engine in the UK against the huge petrol from the US. UK model came in at £50k.

Whilst I quite liked the Jeep it was never a £50k car...

what I found even more annoying, was that some options you couldn't order in the UK market. For a car built at one production facility worldwide that seemed daft.

Blame Volvo|UK for that, probably a select few who normally get chauffeur driven around decides what specs UK cars should have
