Will I need a replacement Turbocharger
Hi,
My 1995 850 T5 shudders when the turbocharger kicks in. I'm also getting the smell of burning oil from the back of my engine. Now the engine seems to slightly misfire when I'm at idling at traffic lights. Not being much of a mechanic, I'm guessing that the problem is with the Turbocharger. However, given that the car is pretty old, I'm wondering whether it is worth having it changed? Can anyone advise me of what would be the cost of having a new turbocharger put in. Alternatively, what do people think about me attempting to remove it and refurbish it given that I have virtually no experience with mechanics (but a willingness to learn). Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks Chris |

You could probably pick up a good secound hand one for about £100 or less.
To recon your own turbo would be more expensive as you will have to get it balanced after fitting a kit to it.

help
The oil smell at the back may be the breather system pushing oil out of the cap then running it under the engine cover and down the back.
When was the PCV replaced last ? That may all that needs to be done as In my experience Turbo chargers either work or catastrophically fail

Try replacing the oil filler cap seal (about £2.50)

Guessing the turbo has failed is an expensive bit of guess work, I'd try PCV and oil cap first.

A misfire at idle is unlikely to be your turbo....
PCV would be my bet.., damaged inlet manifold elbow for the judder and fractured separator pipework for the smell... http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=46946 Jod

PCV System Replacement
Thanks very much for your advice everyone about the PCV system - much appreciated. Tod's query about whether smoke is coming out of the dipstick seems to have confirmed the location of the problem too.
However, do you think I need to replace the whole PCV system or can I just give it a clean. As you have guessed by now I'm no mechanic, so thanks in advance for your patience! Chris |
