North West Auto Electrician
Hi Guys,
Could anyone point me in the direction of a good auto electrician based in the north west/north wales area? I'm looking to replace the factory fixed stereo in my 2003 XC90 with one that has Apple Carplay and have read that it'll need an expert to do the job properly. Thanks |

Hi, not sure about local fitters, and I am sure you will know that your radio is actually an information control module and controls not only the radio, cd and minidisk, but also the park sensors, sat nav and phone (if fitted). You stand a good chance of losing these in favour of another proprietary architecture (apple,)
It may be more cost effective by interacting to the existing systems. There are ways that members have done this on this forum, that is of course if your existing ICM works. These range from costs of about £10 to play music or use phone (FM modulator) to more complex interfaces you can read about. But if you want to go this route and many modern head units include satnav and rear park camera, My xc90 ( I have a my 2003 too), would be that the cost would be more than the car is worth, but any competent car audio supplier should be able to fit. Incidentally I use an FM modulator. Hope this helps. John l |

Thanks for the reply John. Yeah I know this is gonna be expensive to do with the adapter kit alone costing more than a lot of stereos! I still haven’t sourced one of these yet as the one everyone seems to recommend on here isn’t available from the supplier anymore but if I can find one it is supposed to keep all the functionality you mentions.
I love my car though and it’s gonna be a long time before I can afford the XC90 v2. I know the history of it and I’m hoping (fringes crosses) it will last for at least a few more years. I already have the Dension kits, a Bluetooth kit and a Parrot car kit installed. It’s the Parrot kits that’s really prompted the idea of an upgrade. It’s just not working well at the mo either failing to connect or not doing anything after asking Siri to call someone. So yeah the cost of doing this is gonna be more than the cost of the car but I still think it’ll be worth it for me |
