2015 V70 - Knocking from rear
New member here!
Over certain bumps, (speed cushions make it particularly obvious), I get a distinct bump/thud from the rear that seems to be created by movement from the front of the car. On a speed cushion for example, when the front goes over..the rear unweights somewhat giving a noticeable upwards based bump/thud from the rear. When the rear goes over, there is silence. (I have checked exhaust and emptied the boot, no change). Can anyone shed any light? |

Check the front bush on the rear trailing arm, known weakness, last about 40k miles and a £300 job at dealers. They are hidden behind a plastic cover and improved design to try and make them last longer has been introduced by volvo in the form of 2 side covers you fit once bush fitted.

I agree with what Green Van man said. Those rear suspension bushes fail all to often and to easily. It is a Ford based part. You need a special tool to replace them and last time i checked it was a few hundred £ and not many garages had one. As this fault is getting more common place, I would expect the price of the tool to come down and also more garages to have them. The bushes are readily available on Ebay for around £40 for both sides.

Sorry for the late reply - thank you both.
I am still in warranty, so have it booked in to the dealers on Wed. What is the best way to check? Prybar and just a good, forcefull wiggle? Cheers |

Were they looking with their eyes shut?
Sound can travel through a car but if you are sure it's from the back time to get under it and giggle it about in order to find where it's coming from. A helper to bounce the back is helpful while you not only listen but feel for the knock. Easiest thing is to empty the boot and go for a drive just in case it's the jack or something causing it. Once that is eliminated it's time to get dirty. Check all exhaust mounts first then move on to suspension and dampers which is where a helper is good. Paul. |

Maybe take a trip to my Volvo specialist - Horton Cars - in Oakley, Bucks. They should be able to help. Or just give them a call and speak to Graham, who knows his Volvos very well.
