A question that would have been better in the sub-forum for V70s.

However, one 'common' fault with the power steering is that the 'return' pipe into the reservoir has to be set up correctly to prevent 'aeration' of the fluid. I think the return pipe should dip into the fluid; and if it doesn't, the steering gets very noisy and a bit 'lumpy'. I'm not 100% certain on the procedure to 'fix' because when I had that problem, my local indy did it for me for nothing! But, as we get on together well, I eventually persuaded him to have, at least, a beer token!

...have you bled the system in the usual way?

wheels just off the ground, engine running, reservoir cap loose or off, steering wheel rapidly turned from full lock to full lock until fluid level in reservoir drops and pump cavitation noises stop and all air has been expelled. Then top up fluid to correct level.

I'm no Volvo expert and have not changed a pump or rack on a Volvo but have on many other makes in the above manner with success every time.
