Just picked up the latest WC and the new X3 is tested. X3 comes in 1st, XC60 2nd. Main difference appears to be the BMW 2.0d engine which is a cracker - 8s 0-60 and 50mpg.

having had a few diesel BMs in the pasy, i'd have to agree the 2.0d is a good engine - the trouble is it still sounds like a 4pot diesel (a smooth one but...) and in terms of refinement and image is nowhere near the 5 pot Volvo engine. However, for tax and economy it has no equals.
the 3.0d is a stormer however! |

They were testing the D3 and they said it was the volvo that was a bit unrefined and gruff.

Just goes to show one man's meat and all that - I find the 2 litre BMW engines bland and characterless (I should know, I've got one!) and I love the "gruff" characterful note of the Volvo engines.
I had a good look at the X3 at the stealer the other day and it looks like a massive improvement on the old version, and you can be sure it will be great to drive. But realistically I'd want the 3.0d which isn't out yet and will likely be out of budget, plus I wanted a change from BMW and I just love the XC60's packaging ![]() |

For what I want the XC60 is ideal - spacious, comfy, poky enough, 4wd and that all important adaptive cruise (and on mine when it arrives, queue assist). The X3 was on the list, but the lack of ACC and the probablity of no discount made the XC60 the oly way to go.

I'm getting a 6 cylinder 1.6l BMW later this year. A little underpowered you may think... except it'll be powering a motor bike!

Better than an X3 or Q5

Hmmmm, I had a quick look at What Car lunchtime and the XC60 had among the highest running costs BUT they didn't seem (it was only a quick look) to take into account the actual purchase price, you can get big discounts on an XC60, try that trick with BMW or Audi and they laugh at you!
Also by the time your german car arrives VAT will probbaly be at 45% if the thieving chancellor carries on like this? On that thought anyone fancy organising an Egyption type coup? |

Tweak the engine's volvo and the XC60 will be untouchable. Leave the rest of the car for the time being (though might be an idea to pop the front fog lights back on.

I spec'ed up an X3 3.0 diesel the other day .. came to £47k with a few of the option packs!
Like the Q5, they're trickling in the imports .. so expect no discounts, but high residuals initially. S |
