P1800S for sale in Dublin at Deane Motors...
Hi, I am a newbie here and looking for help, any guidance greatly appreciated.
I am a huge fan of the P1800S, and have been looking for a while, just waiting for the right car. I have found what looks like a beautiful car at Deane Motors in Dublin: https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1186020 I believe it is the very same car that Hilton & Moss sold back in 2013, when it moved from England to Ireland. It's a long way for me to travel and view a car, based on a few photographs, any help and advice would be truly appreciated. Anyone that knows the car, your insight would be of huge help. Kindest regards Mark |

I knew that car very well and I knew the previous owner. The replacement engine was sourced by me from amazon cars and replaced by us as the unit the car came with in 2013 had "starting problems". the car was restored in 2000 using all new wings and door skins however other metal work was not done to the standard the car deserves. Still a cracking car at the time with lovely chrome and interior. The last I saw of the car was in mid 2016 and some rust was starting to show. The braking system was also upgraded to a dual system for added safety.

Interesting about this car.
I looked at it in the Hilton & Moss showroom in 2012. The car was very tidy with the unusual re-trim of red dash and blue carpet. At the time I did not know much about P1800 cars and did not know what to look for in restored cars. I asked about the engine work on the car and the H&M salesman came back with a very incomplete explanation as to what work had been done. The reason given for the car being up for sale was that the then owner felt the car was too good for rallying once finished and felt it was better to sell...? The car was sold to an Irish customer I believe in the autumn of 2012. I know nothing more. |

thank you, I appreciate your replies.
It's very hard for me to make a judgment from the photos, as we all know any car can look great depending how it is photographed. Even from the dealer photos I can see there is something going on around the engine lid/bonnet hinges - they look patch welded, but i may be wrong? On the Gov MOT checker, all the old MOTs had advisories: "Underbody & underbody components coated with thick underseal restricting proper inspection of testable items". That could be a good thing preserving the car, but it could also be hiding bad repairs or shoddy metal patch work - proper inspection is the only way to know. JP, the Hilton & Moss description mentioned "The engine was recently uprated with a 2.0 head and uprated cams along with a stainless steel sports exhaust". When you done the engine swap did you retain that head and cam? many thanks mark |

The engine was replaced with a B18 unit as these are more readily available and in keeping with the original car. The b20 engine was seized due to oil starvation so when I pulled the head off, the rest of the block was sent off for weigh in. I removed what I could from the block to either keep as spares, honestly most was for the scrap yard. I asked the owner if they wanted the head and was told to keep it. It's on my b20 Amazon now as it is a FI head which I reconditioned. It would be best if you called me to discuss, I have sent you my number in a pm

Just to make clear my earlier comment about the engine, The description on the Hilton & Moss website of the engine "upgrade" gave me some concern at the time when I saw the car. As they could not expand on what they had taken as a statement from the previous owner, I asked them to enquire further as to precisely what had been done. The response that cam back was woolly to say the least. For that money I want a car that needed no more work. The engine remained a question mark. This appears not to have been great.
For the car I eventually bought (1964 built) 1800S I always wanted to up-rate the engine. As it happened the car I bought in 2012 had had a swapped engine for a B20 in its earlier life. This was running OK on purchase but its power was significantly below its original performance. I was not too disappointed as I want the engine rebuilt to a fast road spec by Templar & Wilde, which they did very successfully. Since then the car has been mechanically faultless. I have done trips to France, Holland ,Germany Sweden and Norway. This last year doing a 2,000 mile trip including the North Coast 500 (Scotland) without trouble. The engine is sprightly and very forgiving. Great fun on Prescott Hill Climb etc. Have driven nearly 20,000 miles in last 7 years. |

A true testimonial of Volvo's reliability & durability. Glad to know you are really using your 1800 - keep it up and hope you enjoy it for many years to come.
