Default Air Con compressor seized

Car is a 2008 V70D5 60,000 miles.
My wife has just come back from a trip to Glasgow and i jumped in to run my daughter to her pals and i noticed the air con was not working. It was fine yesterday.
Back home i stuck the car up on the ramp and dropped the engine cover off, i found the compressor belt snapped in two and the compressor clutch seized solid.
I have heard this is a common issue but hoped to escape it. i am just glad it didn't take out the cam belt as well.
Any one know how much i sore wallet is going to be hit for this time?

Well got a couple of prices today, supply only from volvo is £600 plus £80 surcharge until I return the old one. Or I can get a remanufactured one for £315 with no surcharge.

I will need to get the system flushed and regassed but I think I am going the remanufactured route.

Compressor failures seam to be quite common on the phase 3 D5, does anyone know the cause?

Check the scrappys first, I got one for mine for £20 they are rarely sold so they are happy to take a few quid for them , also pretty easy to replace ,a bit fiddly but doable.

Called dealer, who advised the recall stopped in 2012, they asked Volvo about a goodwill contribution but this was declined.

I was able to find a local air con specialist that supplied a OEM Valeo compressor for £295 plus VAT, he also degassed, flushed, fitted and regassed the system at my house for £40 cash.

So all sorted for £400.

I know this is an old thread and you have probably got it sorted now but I didn't think recalls expired? I always thought the were on-going.

I don't think it is a proper recall, it's more they know there is an issue and
It appears they will cover the compressor up to five years old then your on your own.

Does anyone know if this seized compressor cluch requires the whole compressor to be replaced, or just the clutch assembly?

We have the same fault on our 2008 D5 at 60k miles

Aye, terrible things these Volvos. If they're not all spitting their aux belts, they're snapping cam belts, seizing their alternator freewheel, trashing their transmissions or spontaneously combusting- I don't know why anyone buys them.

Or, maybe it's simple "confirmation bias" where a few people highlight a few problems but it's on the internet, so it must mean it's "common".
