Steve they are most definitely NOT the same.

If you look at the above picture of a 740/700 Series mirror you can just make out that the backplate that fits to the door is shaped like a tick (not the animal but the symbol!!) on its top edge near where it adjoins the wing, and the metal bright or black door trim/window wiper continues underneath the mirror to the leading edge of the door .... whereas .... on a 900 Series mirror the backplate is square (for want of a better expression), and the door trim goes into a 'slot' at the bottom of the faceplate where it is hidden and terminates short of the leading edge of the door. The faceplate forms all the junction between the door and the wing.

Also ... the drive motor/system and mirror fixing on a 700 is different. To remove the 700 mirror you use a screw driver up the hole underneath to release the mirror and its backplate together .... on a 900 there is no hole underneath and the mirror and the backplate pull off (with difficulty!!). It is also difficult to find 700 Series mirrors WITH the heated mirror back fitting attached on eBay these days; they are all the more 'modern' type fitting, and of course that won't fit a 700 motor assembly.

Having said that the fixing to the door and wiring for each of the Series is the same.

So .... in conclusion you can fit a 900 Series mirror complete to a 700 Series after reducing the length of the door/wiper trim .... but you can't really fit a 700 Series mirror to a 900 Series unless you want a gap underneath where the longer door trim of a 700 Series should go.

Here's a picture of a 745 mirror in place and a couple of 900 mirrors lying on the ground.

Bob, thanks for all that. I was just looking to have it as a spare in case someone swiped the one on my car.

I will leave it for someone with a 740, it's a nice thing to have in stock as I bet they aren't cheap new and may not even be available.
