I haven't heard of anyone doing these diy due to the access. It leaves a lot of potential for messing it up and losing any diy saving unfortunately.
You could almost forgive Volvo for tucking it out of sight if it was incredibly reliable but it isn't.

What happened to the days when you went to halfords for a £10 part and did it on your drive instead of a quoted price of £276 labour and £107 for the part from my local Volvo dealer.

Agreed.
So many of Volvo's later mechanical decisions leave me shaking my head.

Its a complete housing with 4 bolts and 3 hoses, where is it hidden that it can't be changed by a DIYer?

It's not that it can't be changed by a diyer, it's more that because it's not in plain sight, it's not a simple case of drain coolant, remove housing, replace gasket, replace housing, refill coolant.
There was a thread on here a while back showing the location and it looks a right pain.
To save nearly £300 labour, I would still attempt it but I can understand why folks don't.

Hi It's hidden at the back of the engine tucked away behind the turbo. I had a go at changing one on my son's 2009 D5 . Access is so limited that after half an hour we phone localmain dealer for quote. They quoted about £200 ish . We bit their hand off at that price .We already paid £130 for the stat . When he collected the car he met the fitter who said it was a pig of a job and he went a couple of hours over the quoted time !

So what does an Indy / small garage charge then? The hours it takes or on the chin?

I found this with rear trailing arm bushes Dealers rate was higher but a 3rd of the time so a lot cheaper and genuine parts.

Also as they fix prices you know where you stand when collecting. Interested to hear what happens?
