Default MOT's Deferred for 6 Months ....

Due to CV-19 as of 30 March 2020 the DVSA have issued notice that an automatic 6 month extension is to be granted to due MOT's. See below for full details/advice and prior to 30 March exceptions:

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavi...scPnrFCs2VY-5E

I assume that Insurance will still be valid as the car has a valid MOT if it has an extension

Presumably the insurers will still rely on the codecile that it must be maintained in a roadworthy condition though!

I am sure that they will Dave!!

I haven't read the minutia but, note there is a 'bit' about keeping the car safe to drive.

Hmm my MOT is due on the 31st March. I have a booking for it on the 28th, I might just cancel that and go with the 'free' 6 month extension!

FYI - our local radio have just had a representative of the Assoc.of British Insurers, Malcolm (Tarling?) answering questions.

He mentioned that there had been consultations with the Government on the subject of the extension. He confirmed that 'it's business as usual' for car owners with your cover as normal during the extension period.

Naturally you will have to renew insurance if the policy expires during the extension period.

The 6 month extension will be treated as a valid MOT by insurers, but as is required under normal circumstances the car must be kept roadworthy. If you have any doubts contact your Insurer.

He also mentioned that there is information on their website: https://www.abi.org.uk/

You're in a very dubios area there! Check to see if your MoT has already been extended and only cancel the test at the last minute if so until you know for sure. There is a link to the MoT History page from the link Bob kindly provided in his opening post.

How long this will be the case, we don't know, presumably until things start returning to normal, whenver that may be! My guess is it will take 6-9 months just to get somewhere near being back to normal and up to another year before we're back to the general state we were in before Xmas.

^ yes I know the link thanks, thats why I know my MOT is valid until the 31st.
As there is no central register of booked tests that will affect the MOT database I doubt it will leave me in a dubios area...

You would still have had to spend £500 just 6 months later.

Very true and quite possibly more. Taking a wild guess there was probably some welding involved as MX-5s have a reputation for rusting in structural places and that could easily have developed into more welding.
