I wouldn't mind paying a bit extra for main dealer parts if there wasn't a lot in the difference between them & aftermarket price wise. However, it seems aftermarket brands are much cheaper for these particular parts.

Thanks for the link V70Zig.

Not wishing to be a bore , but as an MOT tester I see worn inner rack joints daily , some far worse than others . The wear does lead to knocking & can be mistaken for outer track rod ends / anti roll bar drop links / strut top mountings / ball joints or wheel bearings when checking .
I have just fixed the inner tie rod ends on my Corsa, and I can agree with the above statement, things get quite "knocky" when they are worn. Along with vibration, strange effects when accelerating and braking as one wheel is steering itself under torque.

Stand to be corrected but in 40 years of motoring I've never had an issue with them on any car I've owned....don't make them like they used to. Glad they don't but I rather suspect that cost comes into it....

Bump. I was just looking for info, and found this thread.

If anyone finds this in the future, FYI, Servotronic is a cross-brand name for speed-sensitive power steering (i.e. lighter when parking, weightier at speed).

In the case of the P3s, the inner track rods are different. One type is ~28cm long, and the other is ~30cm long. The shorter type fit cars with Servotronic steering.

The one thing I haven't worked out yet is how you tell whether or not your car has Servotronic steering. I suspect it's in the VIN, and you can probably see some gubbins on the rack itself, but I wasn't planning on getting mucky today!

cheers

James

I'm doing a refresh on the front of my p3, I noticed on autodoc the inners had different length. Looks like a case of hoik the old one off and measure. Another week off the road while I wait for parts.
I refuse to use eurocarfarts.

Maybe I've never spotted the right location, but I've struggled to get that sort of detail out of VIDA. You often get a list of variants of parts, and little assistance with which applies to your car.

Is there a spec page somewhere in VIDA which I've missed?

The design of the joint of the 'drumstick' is different - smooth / round on normal PAS cars, and angular / hexagon (or maybe octagon?)-shaped for Servotronic cars.

cheers

James

Question...

If you put your hand on the outer track rod ends (whilst they're still attached to the spindle), should you be able to move them by hand left and right in a twisting motion, or should they be solid and not move at all?
