My Indy used to put 5.7 litres in, but a couple of years ago I had the warning light come 10 months from that previous service, and had to suck a couple of hundred millilitres out, so ever since have played on the safe side and asked for 5.5 litres. It about 50-60% on the dipstick.

I do plenty of town driving. I'm sure if you do plenty of long runs 5.7 litres is fine.

what he did not do was reset the oil gauge when he put 5.7 litres in, this would have kept the light out . This is done at every service in a specialists , ( volvo dealer) .

Default Xxx on the dipstick

I'm having the issue currently. The oil was over filled by a lage amount, I could not see any x's on the dipstick. I have removed about 600ml of oil through the dipstick. I can see 3 x's on the dipstick now but after about 100 miles of driving the message is still there.

How many x's should I be able to see on the dipstick and will the light reset its self or do I need the message clearing by the dealer?

Thank you!

That is the first year they had the level sensor , the correct oil level is 2/3 up the xxxxxxx as you know .. The correct quantity of oil to put in after an oil change is 5.7 litres and it should make the dipstick reading as above .
Hopefully your engine software has been updated as the years have gone by?

Thanks for the reply. I'll check this again tomorrow. I'm not sure weather the software has been updated. I bought the car seconds hand. It has had its services at volvo but I can't be 100 % that this has been done.

Thanks

Thanks.

I took some more oil out today, we are now just under 2/3 up the xxxx.

Hopefully this will suffice, done around 20.miles since and the light it still on.

Should it go out by itself?
