Grrr, car let me down for the first time 😢
Parked at a friends for 2 hours after a good run and nothing from the starter when we come to leave (car is manual).
What I have noticed whilst waiting for a jump start is that the air on compressor keeps engaging with the engine off, looks like the sensor at the top left of the engine, temperature sensor at a guess. Guess that’s a clue! Time will tell when I get it home. Battery is only 2 or 3 months old and a good make so unlikely to have suddenly failed. |

Spotted the problem, can’t fix it at the side of the road. RAC get paid a lot each year so they can take the car home.
Engine earth strap has broken. |

Well RAC said 4 hours for someone to have a look!
Bodgery got it going, 2 jumpleads to split the current and bypass the broken strap. Now to find a replacement strap. |

New heavy duty strap from ebay fitted, it's never spun over so quickly, and on a low battery. I drove it home without the strap connected, therefore no to very little charge reaching the battery - the low battery warning was on when I got it home.
Looking at the broken end of the old strap, there are only half a dozen strands of the cable that had been connected at the end. Winder if I condemned the old battery a little early...…. Anyway I can live with a £15 repair every so often, but I'll be looking for a new recovery company next year! Last edited by reggit; Jun 26th, 2019 at 10:39. |

Mine broke at the lug under the starter motor about a year ago. The old lug is reworkable and the cable got shortened by about 25mm. Plenty of slack in it. I thing the vibrations from the diesel in particular just fatigued the strands. There was no sign of corrosion as such.
