Default Number plate lights

Having got my V70 back from my stepdaughter[she's only had it for 6mths] I now find that neither number plate light works.I've checked the fuse and installed two new bulbs but still no joy.Given that car electrics are a black art to me where do I look next? All other exterior lights work as they should and the bulb failure warning light doesn't illuminate[apart from doing the self check thing when key first turned]Where is the earthing point for the number plate light?Car is a year 2000[registered Jan of that year]P1 2.4 n/a petrol manual.

It's possible that the wiring near the tailgate hinges has been damaged, bit of a pain to locate the faulty bit though...

I go through them a lot... often caused when closing the tail gate hard - the shock damages the hot filaments

Found no power to connector on tailgate.Removed interior trim [where the speaker is in the rear pillar]and found power was exiting the connector there,so conclusion was a broken wire somewhere between the two connectors[probably around tailgate hinge],connected a bridging wire near rear pillar connector and ran it into tailgate[following and taping it to the wiring harness]and connected at that end.Number plate lights now function as they should.
