Default New T5 twin-engine tested on the XC40

I found this article interesting.

Not sure if the T5 twin-engine will be available for other segments. But it surely looks good as an alternative to the D4/D5/B4/B5 engines.

Not something I would entertain, I was hoping for a more powerful version of XC40 T8, and awd. Will wait to see how the XC40 all electric pans out.
I had an XC 40 as a courtesy car the other day, was quite impressed with it really, it is a good size, and would prefer that size car over my XC60 for my needs.
Sure it will sell though.

I'd really like to have a hybrid Volvo but for two reasons:

1 - I don't need 500+ BHP
2 - I can't afford a £60k car

So something like this would be perfect for me, I'd like to see lower powered hybrids on 60 and 90 series cars. We have various output diesel and gasoline engines to suit people's needs and budgets. Why not a choice of hybrids too?

We don't all want/need/afford a T8 but if you would like a hybrid then the only choice is a T8 or shop elsewhere.

How much cheaper do you think they would make it? Right now they charge 4K premium excluding extra options for t8 over t6 (same engine plus hybrid hardware). For weaker version you need pretty much all the same hardware minus a few battery cells as it’s a lighter car. It’s probably more costly for them to source new weaker electric motor and lower rated transmission since it increases their range complexity. So If you managed to get the weakest possible petrol engine like a t3 into an xc90 with that hybrid hardware you would end up with the same price as d5/b5. That’s starting price but since the target customer will be a lot more thrifty the margins will end up squeezed. I just don’t see them doing this. They will not gain new customers but will increase range complexity and costs.

Oh sorry for expressing an incorrect opinion...

The T5 Twin Engine is 2WD and combines the motor in the gearbox, it's a different design and probably cheaper to make. I've no idea if the motor or batteries are inferior in spec/quality to a T8 but I would hope not.

182 BHP + 82HP motor would be plenty powerful enough for me, that's more than any T4, T5, D4 and D5.

Cheapest XC40 Twin Engine is £8.5K more than a T3 auto.

If that same uplift was applied to a V90 T4 then a T5 Twin Engine 2WD V90 would be around £48k mark, that's a good £12k less than a V90 T8 AWD.

If there's no market for lower spec hybrids then why are VW completely sold out all production slots of Golf and Passat GTEs? I'd have one tomorrow if I could order one. The appeal is silent running around town, some possible savings in fuel and the extra grunt the motor provides.

I don't need to get to 60 in 5 seconds, I don't need AWD and I can't afford £60k for a car. Something in the middle would be great and for me a T5 Twin Engine V90 or V60 would make a lot of sense.

I'm with Deman77 here. It's apples and oranges really.. you can't just apply the pound for pound difference in price from a CMA to SPA.. I'm sure a 3-cyl ICE, lower electrical power and smaller battery capacity car wouldn't cost exactly the same as a T8 version- but the price difference wouldn't be as significant as you think (wish..)

Another thing to consider is a significant weight difference between an ICE-powered and a twin-engined car of similar power. As much as I agree with you on the point that I don't need a 500hp SUV for a daily driver- A 240hp twin-engine hybrid wouldn't have nearly the performance of a D5 ICE-powered car, for eg.

BTW, am I the only one who noticed the detail on the transmission? A 7-cog twin-clutch? Yummy!

I noticed twin clutch, odd really as quite a few car manufacturers are going away from them, they just struggle with the huge torque, (well manufactures do not make them man enough to) would be interesting to know why they have fitted that, as not a performance car, so it is weight? Although tbh it will not be sluggish.

I suspect a twin-clutch won't be much lighter than a torque converter AT..

As much as I'm happy with the 8-speed Aisin box - I imagine the TC is much snappier.. I'd love to test it!
