Default Cleaned out Power steering fluid and replaced

Bored,,,, so got a new HUGE syringe and some rubber hose. sucked the lot out and then put some clean fluid in. Ran for 20 mins and sucked all that out

first lot was almost black, second lot much much cleaner

very simple job.

I have some "slick 50 " power steering fluid that i got cheap from Halfords (trade card) going to fill it up with this in the morning

was shocked at how dirty the oil was

doubt i will notice any difference ! but new oil is better than dirty !

Hello, I make this post with partial knowledge and lots of concern for your pump. Assuming you have a more modern vehicle; the pump has small, floating vanes within it. I'd just be leery of introducing a "wild card" product from an additive company. Remember that the North American owner's manuals failed to update the fluid requirement. The same may have happened in your neck of the woods. TRANSLATION: Given your fluid was black with neglect, it's not too big a stretch to assume your system was also subject to haphazard fluid additions. I'd only use Pentosin CHF-11S fluid. It's what Volvo brands as their own. Slick 50 additive to an old engine or gearbox; sure. Anything other than a known commodity in a modern, teeny-weeny power steering system; no way. Kira

Do you think every volvo garage /owner uses Pentosin ?

i can imagine most people use all sorts of stuff from different companies

yes every dealer does for sure it is part of their franchise contract .

The power steering systems can use ATF or The volvo green stuff , they changed over from red to green in the mid 1990's and both were acceptable , the green has better low temperature performance ..
Steering racks are around £600 at least and pumps around £250 it's up to anyone what they put in their own system , but i'd prefer an oil which A, is tested and recommended by the manufacturer and B, one which has been tested by millions of owners over the last 20 years or so.

so a Halfords own brand or a Comma etc would be ok

? I think the snake oil debate can work in reverse sometimes !

CHF-11S if you put ATF in it the seals in the rack will swell and then leak, gets costly to repair after that - Mike

This was never a problem when the fluid was changed over from red to green and volvo said both can be used , i doubt if the current racks have seals which are not red ATF proof ... I have seen many later volvo systems filled with the "incorrect" red ATF by back street garages with no ill effect and likewise i have also seen recent racks leaking with the correct green fluid .

Anyway the answer is always use the green synthetic volvo approved fluid in all volvo power steering systems to be sure ..

Bought some Green fluid today (£11.00) drained out most of the fluid which was nice and clean . topped up with new fluid

as mentioned in another thread , the filler cap seal tells you what you need

Green or Red its thats simple !
