New lock problem
Just replaced both door lock barrels plus the boot lock barrel in my 1968 Amazon 131. That was fairly straight forward once I worked out how the door mechanisms worked. The problem I have is while the new barrels, new keys and new lock push rods appear to function properly when locking and unlocking the doors, I can't remove the key while the door is unlocked. I can remove the key when locked.
Today I left the driver's door handle and lock with a locksmith who is scratching his head and advised I ask on this forum. Any ideas please? Thanks. |

Is the key returning to the horizontal position? If not the key will not come out.Either that or the lock is wrong by 180 degrees.

Welcome to this Forum! I agree with David...it sounds like either Lock Cylinder or possibly Tailpiece are off by 180 degrees... Good Hunting! |

New lock problem
Thanks Ron & David.
I have had the new barrel in and out of the cylinder enough times to see it will only seat comfortably in one position, as that thought had occurred to me too. I had bought a complete set of three barrels and a single key (duplicated) from Brookhouse as I had previously had a worn lock in the driver's door and another in the boot, and had previously had two keys. I thought best to replace all three and be able to use one key. The boot look works perfectly but there is something amiss with the door locks. It's a real conundrum. I will scrutinise the old barrels closely again in case there is a difference but am still hoping the locksmith works it out. Thanks again. Kevin. |

New lock problem
PS ..................... The key almost returns to the horizontal position but is a millimetre short.

Did you have both door handles dismantled at the same time? If so, it may be that some of the parts have been swapped over, as there are a few components that look identical, but in fact are handed. I have scan of a tech article on how to rebuild the handles which explains all this - if of interest, PM me your email address and I can send it over.

Paul, does your scan have the pictures? I have the article in Swedish and the English translation as Word docs but they don't have pics. Pics might be separate on my other hard drive. Thought I'd ask before searching.

New lock problem
Thanks Amazoniste & Derek.
I dismantled them separately so there was no confusion with swapping parts. Even now, one handle/lock is with the locksmith and the other is still on the car. I'm off to the locksmith today, keeping everything crossed. If he hasn't found a solution I'll PM you. The moral support is much appreciated. |

Hi Derek, it's the one where a couple of years ago I overlaid the English translation and captions that you supplied onto your scanned Swedish article a couple of years ago - let me know if you'd like me to email it over again!

New lock problem
Hi Paul
I thought about what you said about mixing left hand and right hand parts so I dismantled both locks again and compared the parts. While I did not mix any original parts up I had made the mistake of thinking both new barrels were the same but on close examination realised they are mirror images. Having now put the barrels in the opposite locks the problem is solved. Strange the lock smith didn't suggest that, though he only had one lock to look at, and it isn't mentioned in my Haines book either. Many thanks for that train of thought. Kevin |
