Just remember that studs does nothing on snow, only on ice. Solid especially! A normal winter tyre without studs (like the ones I've just bought) are better on packed or loose snow and in slush.

Could you also re-iterate the the questions that you pose, will make it easier to confirm whether the answers have been created

I voted "no" to the poll. I dont know about others in the UK but after last winter I thought to myself surely it will not be that bad again before I voted..........looks like it could be worse!
I could feel the AWD (probably the first time I've really felt it) this morning coming out the cul-de-sac on the slippery roads - it felt quite reassuring actually. Not saying I should have changed my vote........yet - but will see what the next few weeks weather is like and may reconsider

Yee-ha!
Heavy snow here in West Wales, and I had to negotiate a known local trouble spot, the hill out of Felinfach past Temple Bar on up to Bertheos caravan park; it was JUST as other posters about winter tyres have stated - I went whizzing (relatively) up the hill, past slitherers and sliders of all types, e.g. lorries, vans, ordinary cars - it was fantastic! What a feeling! Yep, smuggest guy on the road! Citizen Vredestein. |

I voted 'no', simply because I never have fitted a winter tyre. Infact until this last year or so I never knew there was such an option. On buying tyres I've never been given an option of summer/winter/all-round.
Just been out to look at my cars to see if any are marked up. 240 - Hankook Optimo x 4. Doesn't say if summer/winter/ all-rounder. 850: Rear has Event 'extra load' doesn't say if summer/winter/ all-rounder. Front has Nexen & they are marked with a 'sunshine' an 'umbrella with rain', a snowflake & a 'teardrop shaped thing with a smaller teardrop in it's top right'. I'm so techy! So guess they are all-rounders.

Had a few issues with one bank because 1 chap came to a complete stop in front of me and I lost momentum. But moved around to another area and drove straight up a steeper hill with no problems. It was virgin snow so had quite good grip.
Called the dealer yesterday looking for a price of winter tyres and many continentals are sold out. Many UK drivers are swapping over to winter tyres thanks to last years problems so I've been told. Last edited by Teejay1; Nov 26th, 2010 at 18:54. |

Hey guys...get a grip. I don't intend to change my tyres. I have used my XC60 on soft sand and shingle to launch and had no trouble pulling a boat up a sloping beach in the summer time. So I hope the snow will be dealt with just as easily. I may be first to buy next year if it all goes slippin'n'sliding though. As I live in the north Pennines, I should find out soon if the decision to give it a go comes off! What's 4wd for anyway?

It is often noted in discussions on winter tyres that in cold, wet, snowy conditions a two-wheel drive vehicle shod with winter tyres will out-perform a four-wheel drive vehicle on general purpose tyres.
