Body/Trim: Rear Arch Protectors

I'm having the rear arches seen to next week, they're not too bad but on the 'stitch in time' basis it seems a good idea to have them repaired now. I seem to remember a thread some time ago about arch protectors, much like those that are fitted as standard on the front. The thread didn't show up on a search so I wondered if anyone has fitted some. If so, are they effective or could water be trapped above them?

I bought some from www.volvogue.com quite a few years ago but never fitted them due to modifying the shape of my wheel arches, meaning that they would not fit. They are good quality and I would imagine quite a good investment if you have standard arches.

I bought a set from Volvovogue quite some time ago - I didn't fit them to the 240 I had at the time - cant remember why.

Ended up selling them as part of a general clear out. Wish Id hung on to them as they are a very good idea. The rear arches are a real weak spot due to the way muck and in consequence moisture accumulates there and Ive never really understood why this kind of protection wasn't fitted as standard.

In the absence of protectors then a thorough clean of all the nooks and crannies with a liberal coating of something like waxoil is essential.

Steve if Angie doesn't take these and they will fit my estate I will take them off your hands.

Thank you. Steve, I assume that saloon and estate have the same shape arches. I'll send PM.

I thought they seemed a sensible addition, it doesn't make sense that Volvo fitted them on the front but not on the rear.

I am trying to remember how these fitted - as I recall they fit over the lip of the arch so are noticeable on close inspection - not that this is a problem of course. According to the website there is a second method where they are 'blended in' - will try a You Tube search

Think I will buy a new pair..........

I fitted the Volvogue ones to my 244 when I lived in the UK. The edge of the guard is visible, but looks fine. You'll need a heat gun to shape them -- but heat guns are cheap. I can't tell you if they prevent further rust, since I don't have the car anymore.

Can you recall how they were attached?

If I remember rightly, you have to drill some holes in the wheel arches. I was nervous about doing the drilling, but all went fine.

I would guess that they need to be attached at the other side with screws as well

Its having to use a heat gun to get them to fit properly that worries me - I have visions of them ending up a right mess. Whilst having to write them off would be painful enough I wouldnt want to end up with a load of holes drilled in the arch and nothing to attach.......
