A lot of the things you mention are 'service' items such as shocks and exhaust and the 2nd hand spares availability (& price) is excellent.

You could find some good used front seats (I bought leather ones for £50) have the HG replaced and oil leaks sorted at the same time and get the welding done and you're halfway there.

Regarding economy, I fitted a 5-speed and Weber carb which has seen a huge difference!

As for modern cars being cheaper, we just discovered our V50 needs a new turbo - £800 for the parts alone!! Be under no illusion, running modern cars is NOT a cheap affair.

However, if you want (and are under pressure) to sell, the earlier models like this are getting much more attention and seem to go for ~£1000 for an MOTed example like yours. A start price of 750 or so would see some bidding action.

DO NOT SELL TO THE SCRAP MAN FOR £150!!!
Modern cars are one way money pits- you never get back anything like the amount spent. Classics are not guaranteed investments, but will always be saleable. And different.
Good luck with your sale, someone will snap it up no doubt.

Just had my 245 back from the garage after a complete front and back supension overhaul. Now feels like it's on rails. £1000 for another 20 years of running? Or a 3 year old Fiat 500 in the bay oposite me that needed a new cylinder head after 20,000 miles? 240's are going upupup, 'speshially the 70's beasts. Keep him and shell out slowly if you can. I reckon you'll always regret it. Just sayin'

Thanks for all the above very helpful advice. I am 51 and this is only my 3rd ever car, (the second was a 1980 245 Auto and even this is still down the side of the house!), so you can see that change is an agonising process for me. I have never done my own mechanics and this turns relatively straightforward hobby jobs for the skilled DIY man into expensive tasks for me on garage rates. Rest assured, it ain't going for scrap.

What's holding you back from having a go at your own maintenance? You're already tuned in to a massive knowledge base on here and quality tools are much more affordable these days. You don't have to start with a full engine rebuild but with a bit of research and planning you could save yourself a considerable amount of money over time. We all started somewhere
