Default 850 Estate Boot Opening

I looked at a couple of 850 Estates at the weekend with a view of buying one but it seemed like the assisted lift on the tailgate wasn't working too well and I had to push it up until it got to the top where it would stay. They don't seem to have gas struts like almost all other cars I've seen so how does the 850 boot hindge mechanism work and can you increase the assistance of the lift? (it all seemed a bit heavy to me and I could just imagine being clouted on the head when lifting the shopping in)

Regards

Rhod

Default RE: 850 Estate Boot Opening

Rhod,

the tailgate lift struts are hidden by the roof lining/plastic surround. On my 850 the tailgate will only self support when it's above about 2/3 open, although below that the weight is not excessive. When it's fully open it requires a positive downward pull to initiate the closing so I don't think my struts are too weak. The struts are not difficult to replace if they're tired.

Cheers

Brian
