Default Oil in Water

Right problem!!
Just serviced my 1998 V40 1.9TDI today....,new air filter, oil filter and new oil etc.,
Checked water reservoir....OIL thin film of oil in water!!!! immediate thoughts **** head gasket...but no loss of power, no over heating no anything runs fine..so flushed out water system no oil in radiator or on water in bucket??? washed out reservoir refilled all good just got home thin film of black oil in reservoir...NO WATER IN OIL.., no visible leaks from head gasket?? thought maybe some one filled wrong bit with oil?

Anybody got any ideas or had similar problem???

Doesn't sound too good huh?

Is it using any water at all? I'm no expert but oil in the header tank usually points to headgasket issues.

I'd nip to a local garage and ask them to bung a gas analyser in the header tank to check for combustion fumes - this will (help) identify any gasket issues.

Breather pipes? Intercooler?

Tricky one. Sorry.

If you do alot of short journeys you can get condensation building up in the crankcase and you may get mayonaise on the dipstick and filler cap-take it for a good welly

Its not a mayo issue, this sounds like actual oil within the header tank floating as a film.

Are 100% sure it's oil?

Could it be just manky coolant thats got rust taint, hence the brown film?

It maybe just needed a good flushing out if it ain't been done for a while, there could well be rust in the system (rad etc)

Hopefully you've sorted it now.

Thinking about it if oil was present in the water in enough volume it would emulsify anyway and give you the creamy slop, equally you'd expect to see traces on the dip stick and breathers too.

And remember it only takes a tiiiiny amount of oil to create a film.
