Unhappy 2.5D Crankshaft Pulley

Hello i'm new,

Just wanted to post a warner and a quick question - I have a 2000 2.5D and recently the damper on the Crankshaft Pulley detached itself and damaged the timing belt. Thankfully my wife was driving it slowly towards a roundabout so not much damage was cuased, but if she had been on the motorway its likely the belt would of flown off too with obvious consequences. The car has done 140k and the symptons of it going were a kind of rough chuffing noise under load. The noise had been apparent for some time but nobody could diagnose it and it was put down to the age of the car. Might be worth checking the state of the pulley in the course of a belt change!

Can anyone advise whether it normal for the top tensioner to be vibrating quite allot now a new timing belt kit and new crank pulley has been fitted? Before, i noticed it only used to rock a bit but my mechanic says its ok??? The top tensioner does not come as one of the standard tensioners in a timing kit and apparently should last the life of the engine but i'm worried it might of damaged with the damper coming off.

Thanks

Richard

Which one do you mean by top tensioner, the pulleys are steering pump, idler under it, alternator and steering pump. The other is the auto tensioner, is it that is jumping(bouncing a bit)?

Mine fell to bits in 2004, fitted a Volkswagon part from VW garage.

Go back and make sure the diesel pump timing is correct. Sound like misfire, mine does it but I know the car is running on its original injectors. On mine the tensioner has a small bounce in its belt tension function.

Thanks mate have decided to change the pulley as its bouncing lots and have asked the garage to check timing so hopefully will all be sorted today.

Its re-assuring to hear yours has done a remarkable 420k plus - hopefully i'll have a few more years out of mine.

One 50 pence oil seal in somewhere expensive will see it off. The secondhand prices are now so low its hardly worth fixing.
