Reading your last post Kev - it's a no brainer. Keep it and repair.

First principles apply, How much do you like the car, would you be sad to see it go, can you justify the cost of keeping it.

If the answers are lots, yes and finally, yes then you already have your answer.

Don't know about swirl flaps as I've never had a diesel but if it is indeed the lifters that are tapping I'd try putting some Wynns[other brands are available]lifter treatment in it and see if that cures that issue. For the rest I'm in the keep it and fix it camp.As an example I bought my V70 8/9 yrs ago it had 10 months M.o.T. on it and I paid £50 for it[the paintwork made it look an absolute dog-and still does]over my ownership it now stands me at about £600 spent including purchase price. It's now ready for a new clutch[the pedal is very close to the top of its travel] and is also overdue a timing belt/auxilliary belt change which really makes no financial sense to do considering the value of the car, however it will get what it needs although the work will be done by me,my granddaughter and her partner so labour rates won't apply.

considering the work done already and condition of the rest
if it were me , "fix it" would be the Choice

you can chuck £1k at engine or suspension and make a world of difference for the better, and loose the same £1k on tin worm/bodywork and be looking where the £ went,,

I've heard about hydraulic lifter treatment before. I assume you change the oil and add this stuff to fresh oil?

I think what I'll do then is get it MOT'd early. I don't want buying shocks etc if there's something else that's wrong, so I think it makes sense to get it tested first. As I mentioned earlier, I'd normally MOT it a month before its due in case there's any unexpected items, but I can't do that with this car as 1 month before clashes with Christmas holidays and garages are closed then. Am I right in thinking if I got it MOT'd say next month and it passes, that will supersede the original date? So it'll be November MOT time going forward?

All relative I suppose. You can get an MOT done when you want really. Hopefully it passes with nothing too serious. I'm expecting the advisories to be related to the suspension if anything, but I guess you never know until its up on the ramp. I can hear a very slight knock over certain bumps. To be honest, its very intermittent. I think its a ball joint, as there's a squeak over certain bumps too. Then again, there might not be enough 'play' in it to fail.

Swirl flaps are like EGR valves and wives, great in principle but just try living with them.

you are correct, you Can get a MOT at anytime you wish
its then valid for 12months from that date

November > november ,

yes you would "replace" the current January date by having it done this early,, but at that seems to suit better, and given the weather in Novembers V weather in Januarys,, could be a big +
