Removable tow hook
Hello
I have decided to get my detachable tow hook working again. At first i thought the problem was only the rusted lock mechanism. Replaced it with a genuine from volvo. The key turns, i can rotate the thingy but i don’t get the click. So, i have removed the hook from its place. Looks like the reason for it not clicking is the inner locking thing. See pictures under. Is there any way to get it working or should i consider using it as it is. Would really like to get it working because in some parts of europe you are not allowed to have it. So far i have tried electrolysis to remove any rust, i’ve soaked it with penetrating oil and WD-40. I also gave it a few good smacks with a mallet to maybe try to release any rust/corrosion inside but so far it is still stuck. I’ve heard people using brake fluid to get things moving. Would that be a thing to consider? Also i have. Ot tried to hit the end of the locking mechanism with anything just to make sure i don’t damage it. Any suggetions on how to get it working is appreciated! |

That light grey glossy part is the one that should retract when you rotate the knob to release the hook.
The key to have detachable hooks working well for years is just that, detach them. As soon as they are not used they go into the boot. Out of curiosity, what do you mean by "some places you aren't allowed to have them"? Detachable hooks or hooks in general or what? |

When I got our car, the towbar wouldn’t lock into place - although the indicator showed green… dangerous!
I took the receiver off the car and found the rust build up on it was preventing the tow hook from properly engaging. Half an hour attacking the rust with a file and then greasing it all up restored correct operation. |
