No, there should be very little movement of the bar and it should take a fair bit of effort to move it

yes it should swivel a bit , but no play in it's fore/aft direction in which it operates ..

Did the top mount on my S60 2.0T the other week, it took about 2 hours, but I cut out the shot rubber mount and replaced it with a purple Polyflex bush, and I did it without removing the mount from the top of the engine.

The crossbar on my V70 is easy to move by hand.

I did this on my V70 maybe 4 years ago, but not with the purple Polyflex but some US brand polyurethane insert I ordered off the net. There was an immediate and very annoying increase in vibration.

After unhappily accepting this for two years, I realized that the vibration had decreased significantly and I thought maybe the bushing had softened up. When I looked at the bushing I realized why the vibration had decreased--the bushing was in pieces and probably not doing its job.

I put in the new square one and there is no vibration and I assume it is properly limiting the amplitude of vibrations so I am happy.

Whilst servicing my car yesterday I noticed that...surprise, surprise...the top engine mount is torn and completely detached on one side. looks like a job for next weekend. It seems that OE is the preferred item as it is best at doing its job of insulating the cabin???

This is the case, the purple bush I used does transmit more vibration into the cabin, but I have to say, not so much as to be annoying, and it's most noticeable when stationary, when on the move there is no difference.

The original mount is designed by Volvo to do the best job, and they don't cost much to replace

Before I rush out and spend the best part of 50 quid for what is in essence a rubber bung, has anyone had experience of alternative makes/suppliers other than genuine Volvo....any recommendations welcome please as I need to get this ordered

I know that some Volvo parts are expensive but 50 quid for a rubber bung is taking the p*ss.

If pattern parts are no good or fall apart then fine......but the original item seem to have done that anyhow!

If all you want is the (mostly) rubber bushing in the center of the metal bracket, the Volvo round bushing ought to be less than 50 quid . . . , if it is still available.

The problem with the aftermarket replacements is that they are too stiff and so transmit too much vibration to the passenger compartment at idle.

The best replacement is to put in complete new design bushing and 'square' bracket. Absolutely no vibration and it ought to last a lot longer than the old round one.

Maybe that's what I was quoted for.....I'll have to phone Rufe tomorrow and check what I'm paying for and whether it's the new square mount.

Having looked around, 50 pounds would seem to be the right price for a new mount including bushing
