Re. Excess vibration, IIRC on the Alfaowner forum a number of people drilled a couple of holes in the polybush top mounts they were using, with some success.

One or two even potted up their own bushes using silicone.

I'm either going to buy a polyurethane bush or get the new square bush complete with bracket.

So...Powerflex @£22 or square bracket and bush (OE) at £40...Hmmmmm

Is the later square type better in terms of longevity?

In all honesty, much as I like my V70 and am a relatively new owner, it seems that Volvo have problems with their suppliers....engine mounts, wishbone bushes etc. I didn't have to replace a single bush on my 150,000 mile SAAB 95...although that did eat turbos.

Petrol.

Just Googled reviews on the Powerflex one.....looks like one to avoid TBH

As said on this forum, a number of reports of it causing really bad vibration but then maybe only unhappy users post their views.

Judging by the pictures the Powerflex bushing is symmetric. The Volvo round bushing is asymmetric--it is stiffer in the vertical and softer in the horizontal (fore and aft). You will see that the original round Volvo bushing has voids on either side of a roughly vertical heavy rubber element.

So Volvo intends for the engine to be able to rock fore and aft relatively unrestrained for small oscillations, but be restrainted from hopping (vertical oscillation). A symmetrical polyurethane bushing will not allow that.

The new square mount has voids which allow small fore and aft movements, then resists larger movements. But since the rubber element is not connected to the outer aluminium bracket the rubber should not tear in the same way. The rubber will eventually harden up, wear and maybe even crack, but it will probably last much longer than the original round bushing.

It looks like the square rubber element could be pulled out and a new one inserted in place on the vehicle, but right now the whole part (aluminium bracket and bushing) is all that is available.

D5.

I replaced my old round torn bush with the Powerflex bush a few years back. The Powerflex lasted less than a week before I purchased a new square bush from Volvo. I couldn't live with the truck like vibrations.
The square bush has lasted less than two years (?) 50K, the top half has a tear in it and the bush rattles around inside it's casing.
The new square bush I have purchased from Volvo shows how worn the old one is, the bush barely moves inside the casing. The reduced cabin noise combined with crisper turn in is extraordinary.
I'll just replace it as a matter of routine in future along with discs, pads and tyres etc.

I've ordered a new square mount and have to admit that I've gone for a quality 'pattern' part (Nordic : "100% of all Nordic safety critical products are TS/QS or VDA6.1 quality approved").

Hopefully I won't live to regret not buying genuine Volvo.

It had crossed my mind to take a mould of the old round bush and try and make a silicone replacement but it seems a bit of a bodge.

At least you are sorted, I was going to say I wouldn't put a Powerflex bush in a diesel, it would probably knock your teeth out!!

The standard Powerflex bush for the S60/V70 is a round and yellow, that is the one I avoided!! I fitted the purple bush designed for the earlier 850's (I believe) which is much softer, so the vibration is far less

An independent Volvo shop fitted a purple bushing to my wife's 1996 855 (i.e. 850 wagon), and there was no increase in vibration that I noticed. I don't know if this was Powerflex or not. But that same shop told me that they no longer fit any bushings but OE Volvo due to complaints about vibration when aftermarket bushings were put into V70s.
