"Can you please describe those things?"

Not really, it happened so fast, but the belt tightened significantly, and the seat seemed to both sink down and tilt backwards.

I don't recommend asking for a demonstration...

I know that recently, when having a 'spirited' drive in the countryside, I hit a hump, the wheels left the road and my seat belt pre-tensioners kicked-in, and in an instant and clamped me and my passenger to our seats.

Weird and comforting at the same time

Take a look at this. There's your answer... to what happened to your seat and what you felt.

I seem to remember that the seat belts can be retracted either electrically or by pyrotechnic charge. Which system is employed is determined by the severity of the situation with pyro being the faster and more extreme of the two. Obviously when pyro is deployed the whole unit must be replaced which is why electrical operation is used in less severe situations.

However, there is also a finite limit (I think it's 50) to the number of times electrical operation can be used. Once this limit is exceeded the unit must be replaced so it's not a good idea to deliberately invoke its operation.
