Or, when you have an "Oh ! Bu**er" moment when you realise you gave the key to your wife to pop in her handbag then dropped her off at the railway station or airport and she's gone off for the day or week.

Park Lane, A4202, London by Hyde Park. Seem to recall it was a woman in a Range Rover. Pulled out of car and they drove off. It's not uncommon, a BBC search will bring up some news articles - top of the list is a woman threatened in a car park with a knife. A 13 year old boy alerted other motorists and the police were able to make arrests.

But, in general, the rest of us can sleep easy in the UK.

For what it's worth, I think I will keep the key in the slot but we'll not be having any other keys and trinkets hanging from it either.

For information,non PCC cars will start without the key fob in the hole, if you press the start/stop button twice quickly to stop the engine - then restart by pressing the stop/start button as normal a short while later.

Which car is this for?

I tried in my 2011 S60 D3, doesn't work.

Engine running took the key out of the slot and put it on the passenger seat. Pressed the Start button twice quickly, engine stopped. Waited 10 seconds, pressed the clutch down and pressed the Start button "Please insert key" message in the information panel.
