That 242 is lovely...and ERL is pretty damn clean! I wish I could just stick an engine in on "a day on my week off"!

Got mine running yesterday, drove it up the road but then I noticed the turbo was smoking, I think it's blown a seal because it's not boosting. Also got a whining noise coming from my cam pulley so I'll look into that, I might swap the 531 head on and see if that sorts it.

So are there any more out there that anyone knows about?

Whilst continuing my search for a 240 i have seen a real nice auto.
My initial plan was to pick up a nice 90's 240 manual 2.3 estate & run it through summer before dropping in a 230ft over the winter.

If i bought an auto 240, could i use both the engine and manual box out of the 740 or 940 i would be buying for its 230ft engine ? Would this be a M47 or M90 box & would it be a nut & bolt, plug & play conversion (no electrics to mess about with)?

I realise i would still need manual pedals, gear lever / linkage, hydraulics from a manual 240.

Learnt alot about engines & management lately. Guess its time for the gearbox chapter.

Antz is the man to speak to about the manual conversion...check out his build thread. The manual box will be either an M46 which is a four speed plus overdrive or more likely an M47 which is a 5 speed. The M90 is a much stronger box but needs more work to fit due to the different length of prop shaft etc.

If your fitting the m46 or m47 then you'll need the 240 propshaft for that gearbox, otherwise you need just other stuff, clutch pedal, clutch master n slave and pipework and brakepedal. Oh and gearbox crossmember as sure there different to 700/900 ones

If your going m90 then you'll need to modify gearbox mount and cross member, shorten the gear linkage and adapt the prop. Someplace sells a spacer which bolts a 240 m47 propshaft to back of m90 or you could get a propshaft company to custom make you one.

Thanks for the good info, it would be the m47 i'd want to fit, i didnt know much about the m90 so thought i'd ask.

Not sure if the manual conversion is a step too far, the auto car is mint but it would be easier to wait for a good manual car. But my other thought is that if im changing engine, then why not the box aswell.

I think its the pedal changing thats putting me off more than anything along with the extra insurance to insure 'modified' gearbox.

Our of interest, when did the 940 get the m90 box ? & did the 740 ever get it ?

Thanks again.

Simon.

A manual conversion isn't hard. Theres a teeny tiny bit of wiring to do but youll find the info here from when I asked about this original before I did mine: http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=135847

Swapping the pedal box over is the hardest part of the job. Purely because its a bitch of a place to work in and you WILL need to remove the drivers seat to get under the dash.

Prepare for a couple of hours of swearing, staring into a dark dashboard from upside down and probably a few moments of wondering "why did I do this" but its not that hard a job. I managed it

I'd recommend you find a 940 with an m90, and go to the extra trouble of fitting that. The m46 and m47 boxes don't have the best reputation and the m90 is much better and a lot stronger.

Also, don't discount the b230fk engine, the low pressure turbo version, as it's the same as the B230ft except for running lower boost and having a non-adjustable wastegate rod.

Having stuck an M90 into my 240, it does feel a lot nicer to drive than the M47, and will hold up to a lot more power. Even Volvo wouldn't fit the 5-speed M47 behind a turbo engine, so they knew it wasn't up to much.

Ooh, and having just fitted a set of diesel engine mounts last weekend - the engine feels like it's actually connected to the car now.

stw240 i went for an auto 240 cause there easier to find in good condition and at a sensible price .
and like you say if your pulling the engine out you might aswell convert it to manuel otherwise you will only regret not doing it.
