Default Start Prevented Try Again message

The above message sometimes appears on the facia display of my 2003 S60 D5, and it then won't start. If the key is removed and I try again, the message disappears and the engine starts. Only on one occasion have two further attempts been needed.

The problem was getting more frequent and happening on about 50% of occasions I tried to start, but has become less frequent in the last month.

Any ideas guys - I haven't found any reference to this in the search facility.

Wouldn't Volvo be able to tell you exactly what held up the starting procedure from reading the error codes?

Is it an electrical disruption or does the car attempt to turn over?

Sounds like it could be a problem with the transponder in the keyfob, have you got a spare keyfob? might be worth trying to see if it's any better

Also check you don't have any other electrical type devices on your keyfob, such as card readers for work and the like. This can interfere with the keyfob transponder

Returned yesterday after a few days away and seen these replies; thanks guys.
The problem remains with the other keyfob, but I'l try changing the batteries in one of them. If that doesn't make any difference I'll need to get the fault codes read.
When the message displays, the engine will turn over but doesn't start.

Changing the batteries won't make any difference as these are only for the remote central lock and alarm. The transponder is a chip in the actual key part which is read when you put the key in the ignition by an antennea (aerial) ring arround the barrel this in turn is read by the immobiliser which tells the engine ECU to start or not as the case may be.
If the fault exists with both keys the next cheapest thing to try will be the antenna ring.

Paul.
