Default aircon and stink

Hi guys,i have the air con on most of the time due to steamin up but today the missis used my car to go shopping in with her sister,the problem is she turned the air con off and the most auwfull stench comes out of the vents, when you turn the aircon back on a couple of minuets its gone,turn it off and the stink is back,smells like old socks really rank,any ideas.

Sounds like a stale moisture issue in the system. You can get various treatments for this, there's a Valvoline one you spray through the outside intakes and it deals with any nasties in the system. I think you can also get one that you let off inside the car, try your local car accessory shop.

as above,moisture gets on the evnts and then bacteria grows creatong an awful smell,if you go to somewhere like Halfords,you can get air-con cleaner,you just put the aircon on full on recirculate and let the canister off in the car,wait 10 mins and its done

Cheers guys,down to halfords then,is this a tempory fix,will this happen again or is there a reason why this happens,have i got water getting in the system and sitting somewhere going stale?

Right guys,no pollen filter in mine,done the areosoll clean thing from halfords smells loverly now but whilst standing outside the car with the aircon on so the can could do its stuff i noticed a horrible gurggling noise like water going down a plug hole,only does it when aircon is on is this normal,you carnt here it sat inside but stand infront of car and it gurggles then stops, a fan cuts in,fan goes off then it gurggles again.
