Default Aircon light orange

Recently bought a S40 with the aircon not working. On the dash, the button for the aircon is orange and 'off'. Pressing it does nothing. When the car first starts the light is green but then switches to orange. And ideas? Thanks!

What happens when you rotate the middle knob at the 12 o' clock position? Does the AC light go green or does it stay orange?

I agree with Kieran, it is probably the switch. Even if it is out of gas the control circuitry should still go green but the compressor will cut out on the LP cut off. I can here my compressor cut in and out due to a low refridgerant level!

Is it possible to know whether/when your AC needs regassing? Haven't checked the service log to see if it's something that's due on the 10 year service or similar

The aircon compressor will have two pipes going to it..one bigger than the other, that is the refrigerant return pipe. With the fan on medium speed and the aircon on this pipe should get very cold, only a few degrees or so above freezing. If not it's probably short of gas..simples.You might have to get someone to press the accelerator and run at say 2000 revs to get the compressor to run at a decent speed.

I'm no volvo or car expert but was an aircon eengineer for 16 years.

Hope that helps

Just got back from the mechanic. Aircon is recharged but the compressor will only come on for a few seconds. Mechanic said the computer was throwing a "Blend door circuit high voltage". Apparently this has something to do with the hot/cold knob? Told me it was either the blend door motor or the cabling from the motor. Anybody know anything about this error?

(Don't know if its significant, but on the climate control panel, the half with the control for the temperature is not lit up. Could this possibly be the cause of the issue that somehow half the climate control unit is dead and not giving the compressor the proper signal?)

Thanks!

Can you get the exact error code? With regards to the illumination of the control panel, it has nothing to do with the workings of the panel. There are 3 bulbs in there illuminating the control panel and they do go from time to time. Could you also please answer my previous question " What happens when you rotate the middle knob at the 12 o' clock position? Does the AC light go green or does it stay orange? "
