Default Scumrun 2015

Dear All,

Myself and 3 pals from Wiltshire are taking a green V70 TDI on the scumrun this year. Our team, 'The Inglorious Bustards', will cover 3000 miles in 5 days to raise money for JDRF, a type 1 diabetes charity.

We have a lot of social media links and a just giving page but I don't want to overstep the mark and post things I am not allowed to.

If this is in the right place, would anyone like to see photos or hear more?

Thanks,

Fred.

I have started with the link to our just giving page. This is because it is a charity event and we do not stand to gain financially from this. However, the enjoyment we will gain is going to be immeasurable.

Our team is called the Inglorious Bustards (the Wiltshire flag is green and white and features a bustard). We are all from Wiltshire, the car is green, it makes sense. 'We' are Eddie (28), Fred - me (26), James (24) and Max (26). We have been friends for a very long tie, we all like cars and we all wanted to do something fun and raise a bit of money in doing so.

Here we are outside MRG

This is what we hope the car may look a bit like (minus the eagle, Eddie simply copied to get the font right)

To simplify the rules of the scumrun:
  1. Buy a car for <£500
  2. Raise more than £500 for JDRF (a type-1 diabetes charity)
  3. Drive the car 3000 miles in 5 days with 99 other teams

We chose a £400 volvo V70 TDI in Green. It came from a very nice bloke in Luton.

Here is Eddie posing in front of my pink V70 before going to collect

And here is the guy we bought it from. He used to race offroad sidecar. He made all his own bikes but stopped the sport as it was too dangerous. Naturally, his daughter and her boyfriend now use his machines - perhaps he is trying to tell the boyfriend something!

The car made it back and passed its MOT once the rear bushes had been replaced -we were overjoyed.

We changed oil, air, fuel and cabin filters. The colour and viscosity of the oil that came out suggested a service was long overdue. A pleasing outcome of this overdue service was that in changing the cabin filter, the formerly useless (and smelly fan) was fixed. We also fitted an EGR plate.

The next task was to make a roof rack. This has been made from some old tables that were lying around at Eddie's work.

I also made the grave mistake of ruining the door by reversing with it open. Luckily the window didn't smash and it was 'adjusted' with sledge hammers; you'd never know it happened...

Most pleasing and surprising is the responses we are getting from local companies and volvo-enjoyers alike.
  1. MRG volvo in chippenham are on board and doing masses for us at cost!
  2. PFS Parts have supplied discs and pads for the front of the car
  3. Melksham Motor Spares have agreed to help us out with some parts
  4. MDN shotblasting have agreed to shotblast and powdercoat us a set of T5 wheels KTM orange
  5. Mike Woods Tyres have agreed to shod the T5 wheels in brand new tyres
  6. Kennet Sign and Print have agreed to do the vinyls for the car
  7. We are already raising quite a bit of local interest and hope to blow our £500 target out of the water.

As things progress and the car develops and begins to be a rolling advertisment for everything we are doing, we will update.

For now, please feel free to donate and check my posts in the wanted section in case we need any bits you may have.

Love and respect,

The Inglorious Bustards

Ok, so when you chaps/chapesses look at a sedate, subtle volvo, you probably think nothing of the wheels.

Moreover on a £400 volvo the only comment that you could reasonsbly make would be something like "Hmm, alloys. Better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!"

However, our £400 volvo is going to be different.

1) We are having it wrapped (can post mock ups if there is any interest)
2) A local company offered to shot blast and powder coat a set of wheels.

When we listened to the list of colours, one stuck out.

This is KTM orange....

Assuming the car and occupants make it there and back - keep the car ! It will be great for all sorts of charity events, and anything else you go to

Car is being wrapped as we speak. It is then a case of getting new (free) tyres on wheels and getting it seen.

Following thet we will iron out niggles, finish roof rack and so on.

Ladies and gents, the wrap is complete. Tyres next and then it will be a case of canvassing as many people as possible to donate to our worthy cause and also getting as much support in the form of knowledge and advice as we can.

Thanks,

F

Awesome... I approve massively!

I'm doing similar but doing Rust 2 Rome and appear to have went for a TDi too but missed and ended up with a T5.

Will be following your progress with interest!

All the best!
