Fault code reading- 1997 940 HPT.
I have 1997 940 HPT which has the 16 pin OBD in the centre consul. Has anyone had any luck using this model with a fault code reader? I have tried a Gendan p.c. based reader,but failed to communicate with the ECU. There is no flash code socket under the bonnet,so Im assuming this must be the only way to access codes. Any advice gratefully received.

Hi,
You need to build an LED reader as detailed in the following: Diagnostic Test Box... Or you will need a Volvo box (I think VT2000) but they cost about £1000 a piece. Des. . .

Although it has an OBD II socket your 940 is not OBD II compliant. So, as you found out, generic OBD code readers will not work.
I built a code reader last year, similar to the one previously mentioned, with the addition of being able to read ABS(pin 12) and Cruise control(pin13) codes. The parts cost a total of £17.

940 OBDII reading
Hi gpl1968
Read your entry from June 27th 2010 about reading from the OBDII socket in a 940 (http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=98903). Have one (940) and I need one (reader). I have an intermittent ABS error on the dashboard in my wife’s 945T/1998 and have tried the usual troubleshooting (ABS rings, sensor impedance, cleaning contacts - etc.) When I found your entry in Volvo Forum I knew that I had to build a copy. Though I know that it is possible for me, through a try and fail process, to copy your design it would be so much easy if you would please post a schematic diagram of your design. I have posted this as an entry at Volvo Forums as well, but as winter is definitely coming to Denmark and I don’t like my wife to drive around in a car that is not up to the task, - well I need to solve the problem fast. I've just ordered all the bits to make one of these. I'll have to have a good dig around to see if I still have my soldering iron and some solder. |

Hi to everybody,
I'm just working on this very interesting tool. My Volvo is a 1995 940 "Superpolar" (945) model. I checked his OBD socket and discovered that there is one more connection in it: SRS check system (pin 7, cable grey/orange). Unfortunately there is no answer when I request the SRS status..... so, in my view, there are two possible solutions: - my SRS system is out of work (but the related lamp on the instrument panel seems work fine); - in my model (1995) the SRS check connection present on the OBD socket as been excluded (but the cable is still in place). Have you any idea about that..... Thanks Tiziano |

Hi,
What did you check it with? If it was a generic or standard OBDII reader it would fail. Did you use a volvo reader or some other? Des. . .

Pin 7 does not work with the home-made readers (I also tried it when I made my reader).
I would guess that it is the data link for Volvo's proprietary diagnostics (VCT2000). You will probably have to go to a Volvo dealer for SRS diagnostics.
