Default Clutch Master Cylinder problem?

My 90,000 mile V40 has aquired a problem. When the car was left for a week the bite point seemed very sharp then the car would not go in to gear (al within a few seconds), and the clutch pedal was very close to the carpet having not returned to where it should rest. I pumped it with my foot and everything seemed OK afterwards, but my wife reports a similar problem whilst driving.

I'm thinking master cylinder? Sound about right?

If so, approx how much to make a repair? It'll go to a local general garage but are the parts expensive, is it a PITA to repair?

Any help gladly recieved, thanks.

PS - Why do cars always go wrong just before xmas?

Possibly. First check the fluid level is above the clutch take-off and could try bleeding clutch in case air has got in (due to low level). Does sound like a hydraulic failure in either master/slave cylinder though.

Mine had a bout of "sagging" clutch pedal -topped up the reservoir and it went away. Fluid has stayed up since so, as I couldn't find a leak, I've no idea what caused it...........

As the reservoir is combined it's a possibility. Having said that the sagging appeared when the weather went cold - I know that fluids contract when cooled but the level was a bit too far down for that to happen overnight.....

Dunno, maybe it was only just above the clutch take off and then a bit of worn brake and car being on a hill or something meant it pulled some air down the pipe?... anyway as you say you sorted it ok.

Will check the fluid level, but reassured if it is a new clutch master cylinder it doesn't sound like a horrible event.

Thanks for the advice guys,
