either is fine. probably best looking at the tire prices and going from there.

I have 18's with a 60 side wall which is really tall enough for both comfort and offroad.

As said above there wont be much difference between them - so I'd stick with what you've already got - be that 17 or 18.

Which tyres are you looking to use? I'm currently running Cooper Weathermasters on my Ford Ranger which is a winter tyre with a A/T baised tread, it's also studdable, comes with 12mm tread depth ! They've been great and never got stuck with them. On my XC60 I'm running Cooper Discover Winter but they're road tyres and I wouldn't take them too far off road. If you've not too concerned about winter tyres, a few people on here over the years (more so on Mk1 XC90) have used General Grabber At3
