It's neither. The units are Vizualogic branded so I think previous owner must have had our fitted professionally and some time ago as one of the unit catches had broken and the manufacturer no longer carries spares.

Just waiting on call back from jump leads.
Interestingly, my warranty docs indicate the amp would be covered, so assuming I can get a garage with coding capabilities to deal with the warranty company, it could be disaster averted

New amp cost....
£450 without rear headphone socket
£750 with.

As my dvd players are aftermarket, I'm assuming it's the standard without.
Still.... Crikey.
Will have to pull the amp to check part number and then go down the eBay route and have it coded to the car separately.
I considered Lucasz, but with transportation costs and time for turnaround, doing a swap locally is cheaper and quicker.
Will update when complete and hopefully back up and running.

Volvo breakers/repairs won't work with the warranty company because it takes forever to get paid. Fair enough.
Warranty company won't take my word for what's wrong with it.
Volvo indy says there's no software or car specific coding needed with swapping the amp out. But they'd have to take a look and have never seen an amp go in and of itself.

This just feels like I'm going round in circles with no one who's seen the car able to do it if it needs coding, anybody given the facts willing to take it in without coding and extra 'diagnostic' time/blank cheque and I'm not willing to through money willy nilly at the problem.

I suppose in it *could be *another system that runs through the amp...alarm or parking sensors. But with the fuse for the amp out, there's no parasitic drain and the car is happy, just missing features that I'd like back
It's just taking a long time and money that just isn't there right now. Seriously falling out of love with it.

Suggestion...

Take the car to a dealer, get them to agree with your diagnosis then tell the warranty company and let them pay the dealer to fit a new amp.

Cheers

Indeed.
If it is the amp (it could be something going through it i guess), it will still wipe out what's covered by the warranty.and and still have me forking out £200-£400 on top for labour, as the prices for a basic part consume the warranty limit on audio.
I have a feeling there will be no quick resolution, which will make next week's long trip for medical reasons even less tolerable with no ICE.
It's just the long running, ever expanding series of unexpected and unexpectedly large expenses.

Ah yes - I had forgotten about the upper limit cap on the audio claims - Sorry!

How sure are you about the need (or not) for coding a replacement amp?

Seems like that's the current (sorry!) showstopper.

Also - you have a big drive coming up and want ICE

so

What about reconnecting the amp before setting off and disconnecting it every night - it'd be a pain but it buys you some time and stops the battery going flat.

Maybe you are doing that already...

Just trying to assist in "seeing the wood through the trees"

Cheers

I'm not sure about the need for coding.
A lot of posts or there suggest change of amp *may* require it. A conversation with one indy says it would need software update. Another indy says most likely wouldn't but was decidedly non-commital. And u don't blame them till they've actually got the car to dig around in.
Given my propensity to injure myself or my wallet when arthritis car DIY ( as you know!) I'm loathe to start fiddling about pulling from panels and fuses in a hospital car park, most likely in the rain with two screaming children and a harassed wife.... Would most likely leaf too divorcing and/or murder.

So finally the Volvo indy took a look today. Rogue wire on the amp, which is for the dvd players.
Best guess is that the switching power has given up the ghost and it's just running from the permanent feed.

Anyway, pricing a switch up to manually isolate and fit on the centre console somewhere.

That's great Joe that you've isolated the problem.

Fitting a switch will do it but will you remember to switch it off each time?

I know I wouldn't - I even forget to close the sunroof sometimes...

Can I suggest you incorporate an indicator lamp? Or even use an illuminated switch?

Cheers
