Just had my XC60 MY14.5 EGR modification pipework done 7 months after manufacturer warranty expired. Volvo covered it without a problem and my excellent dealer (Greenhous Shrewsbury) sorted it all out.

Car had lost some performance due to sooting and fault code being thrown.

Now going well but also had the Polestar added just for good measure as Volvo are giving £200 off.

That's great to hear, thanks for posting. My warranty expires in a month and so far I've not had any EGR probs.
Will be asking my dealer what they would do in the above scenario when I'm in for a service/MOT in 2 weeks time

Excellent to hear the first (?) case of a non-warranty EGR fix posted on the Forum. Keep them coming, just to create a good history of Volvo honouring their obligation to fix a problem they created. I suppose a dealer service history is key to this.

If you want to buy the Volvo extended warranty you have to get it before the existing warranty runs out. I was not offered it at my end of warranty service and a month later when I was investigating extended warranty I was locked out of the Volvo stable.

Poor marketing by VUK. They know who has warranties so, unless there is a change of owner they don't know about, they are missing the chance for extra business (unless, of course, they don't really like selling an extra 2 years warranty).

A great relationship with your dealer is key....they were always aware I was unhappy with the EGR thingy just being left to chance. Volvo actually 'extended' the warranty for the EGR fault (nothing official though) for a further 8 months.

The dealer had also investigated an occurrence of excessive tailpipes sooting (at their expense) to see if this was related to EGR, but couldn't do anything as no code stored...

A full service history, a smiley face and a good rapport with your dealer is very important...they are then prepared to go that extra mile for you...and in return I'm a happy customer who will be happy to recommend them..scratched backs all round...

Yep, aware of that thanks.

I've been sent all the info from Volvo, so not sure how you got missed out ( unless you moved house and didn't tell them ? I've moved house since I bought but had let them know.)

I'm in for service and MOT 3 weeks before warranty expires, so will have a chat to them and decide what to do.

Edit : actually just spotted that I've been sent extended warranty stuff both by email and through the post, but that may depend on what marketing preferences you have told them in the past.

But nonetheless, they still had problems - they just took longer to develop.

As it's a 2014 car I would personally be willing to bet my own money that it has had at least one replacement EGR & cooler, and that the dealer is telling you a porkie.

For what it's worth, I would suggest that you insist the dealer states in writing to you that the 12-month Select warranty specifically covers the EGR, EGR cooler, and all related engine sensors. Tell them that you're making it a condition of the sale, because you are aware of the problems the D4 engine has had with its EGR systems.

If the dealer is confident the car has never had a problem, and confident in the warranty, they should give you that in writing.
I sat down with the salesman today who handed me a note of the selekt warranty and called the service manager. Is the egr or related issue of failure coveRed. Yes he was told. He then printed out the t and c's and took me through them. The car has done 10k a year, is three years old, and has a fvsh.

I will be avidly monitoring any slight issue and whisk it in to a dealer if there is a glimmer of problems......

Very pleased with my new car........I like the sport option on the gearbox for overtaking. Pretty swift for a 2 litre auto.
And the resale value is very strong.........

Assuming it's a D4 FWD, then VEA production started week 46 2013, so this must be one of the early ones.
If it is a D4 AWD then it is not the VEA engine.
