Could it have been a one-off ( ok twice in a day, but you know what I mean ), or is it likely to continue on and off and/or get worse ? Should I take it in and get it checked or wait to see if it re-occurs ?
I would take it in , It will have left a fault code to guide them , you should get a free replacement .. Make sure they have an EGR Valve there before you arrive ..to save you a wasted journey . It would be a good idea if they had the EGR Cooler and hoses too just in case there is a cooler code logged , It could save you a double journey.

Clan, I'll give you a 9 out of 10 ;-)

It was indeed the EGR Valve that needed to be replaced, but also there was a separate code that said the solenoid ( pressure sensor ) also needed replacing.

Quote was £895, but as the car was only 4 weeks out of warranty and a full Volvo service history the garage service guys were fairly confident that Volvo UK would come good. They came back later that day to say they would 100% cover cost of parts and replacement and I just had to cover cost of diagnosis - £72

Got the work carried out today, hopefully the EGR cooler doesn't go anytime soon.

Clan - one final point, you said the EGR Valve had been redesigned from the original VEA engine, but my service guys were adamant that there was no redesign, ( only the cooler and pipework had been redesined )and they were replacing like with like........

Thanks again for your input and I'm guessing you are correct regarding the EGR valve design :-)

Very odd you having to pay any diagnostics !

Tell them that the EGR valve stem had a shield fitted to it about 2 years ago to prevent soot going up between valve stem and guide and jamming it . They should be checking the EGR valve for this when ever they have a cooler or valve problem .

I'm just about to enter my last month with my D4 XC60 and it has kicked off the yellow light....

Booked in for next Friday. Not sure if it is connected or not, but I have had to add a bit of coolant over the last year. Car has done 83,000 miles - Reg March 2015, but came from stock so not sure on build date.

mine is going in to dealer next week to have engine check light diagnosed.

April 2015 and only 13500 miles.

had to postpone trip to see my grandson in Aberdeen this weekend so a bit miffed.

to be honest disappointed in the brand re this, although I appreciate all vehicle electronics are very complicated nowadays, but still annoying.

First Volvo I've had as been a Landrover man for a good number of years, and didn't expect problems so early

Question

When Volvo convert to AdBlue will there still be an EGR to cause this fault?

Yes - AdBlue helps reduce the work the EGR system has to do but the EGR valve and cooler will still be there

just to add my bit if not clear from clan.

when a car comes into garage they read off code 9/10 it ecm-p04D900 logged when cooler and egr removed and seperated they should look at number which is clearly stamped on egr valve cross ref with tj and see if its already latest egr if so and not sticking then no nead to replace egr ,cooler ,hoses ,gaskets ,coolant req replacing ,intake manifold sensor to be checked as is exhaust sensor and O2 sensor sw for ecm..

my understanding is if this repeats which they do then new cooler like fitted to spa cars have bigger holes in cooler need to be fitted

regards

I didn't realise it had been introduced so quickly. When Volvo launched the VEA diesel, it was hoping it could avoid AdBlue by using EG cooling and a very active EGR management strategy .... but as we've seen over the past 4 years, it didn't work ...
