its a dilemma to choose to do it or not. All I know is that after 100k they need it doing. The garage I use is a small Volvo independent place. The spannerman took my car out for a drive to see the condition of the gearchange before going ahead with the work. And it was touch and go in their opinion, but with the computer upgrades it just saved it. I also had the cambelt done as it was the original on 133k!!!

The fault you discuss is when degraded worn fluid is discharged and new fluid with different charecteristics is replaced the TCM logs a fault as it cant cope with the change. Your choices are 2 fold, use the method I described above or have it done at a dealer both are euqlly as vaild. Via sump dump you will require 12l and via proper discharge and refil you will require around 8l. The only difference getting it done at a dealer is that they will reset the box adaptations and reset the fluid change counter both of which I can do but didnt see the need to. Would imagine doing it yourself you would be looking at £60 and a few hours work (easy), doing it via a volvo dealer probably closer to £300 but instant. End result is the same, what do you value more, your time or cash? |

No, you will b highly unlikly to have problems. Do however make sure you order a replacement fill plug o-ring, integrated level plug o-ring and drain plug aluminium gasket.

Had mine changed last week, just a dump and re-fill (think they used 6.5L) at the service and it was apparenly like tar. Will do another at next service. Mileage 112K.

That's the best way to do it. give the box a year to circulate fresh fluid, pick up all the old dirt then replace.

how long ? anything from 60000 to 20 years .. I would certainly get the oil changed and the software updated too if it has not had a volvo service for years ...

Your auto box is not fine. It’s more than likely full of black burnt fluid blocking the valve block up and will probably not be fine in 50,000 miles.
Just pay a Volvo dealers to do it or do it yourself it’s not hard to dump dump. Or give it a year or 2 to break down. Goodness only knows what you will be like when you realise that you have an active on command clutch pack for the 4 wheel drive system which has a filter and fluid. Especially when you realise virtually all other applications which use identical AOC recommend changes every 30 or 40k! That’s many hundreds of pounds if and when that fails which it probably will soon if you don’t change the filter and solution (£40 if you do it yourself!) |

I did mine the flushing method to make sure all the old fluid was out. Used about 10 or 12 litres.
