Lumpy 480 turbo
Help! last Saturday I drove 35 mile to another town and parked in a car park,no problem, But, when I came back to the car, it started fine but, as I went to pull away, the car started running as though it was missing on a cylinder ,the further I tried to drive the more erratic it became until it would not pull at all.
After looking under the bonnet to see if there was anything obvious,I called the good old AA who also could not identify a problem and proceeded to take me and the car back home, I have checked the obvius like plugs, leads and distributor cap and petrol is getting through and the idle valve is working. Any input as to what to check next will be much appreciated. The engine turns ok and sounds as though it wants to run but will just not Idle. |

I would suspect the flywheel/crankshaft position sensor, located on top of the gearbox bell housing, may be faulty or shifted its position...

Thanks for that, tested and seems ok, getting a reading of 220 ohms across terminals.

Did you clean the tip of the cranks.sensor? Best to remove said sensor and clean the tip with contactcleaner and a toothbrush. They can get dirty and that causes irratic behaviour.
Another thing I would advise before doing anything else is to replace the rotor, dizzy cap, leads and plugs if not done recently. Those engines are very picky when it comes to ignition parts. Best is to use NGK plugs, bpr8es for the turbo iirc.

Hi again, thanks for the info both of you, I removed the flywheel senser ( swear words realy help in this situation !!) and although it looked ok I cleaned and replaced it, and the engine fired up and ticks over just fine now.
I just cannot believe how such a small thing can make what seems a major problem. Thanks again chaps for the guidance. Mike Happy New Year. |

That one little thing makes the whole engine work.
Just replaced mine and then found out it was the ignition amp at fault! £35 wasted. £5 for another ignition amp at the scrappys lol SC |
