It's a MAF which means Mass Airflow Sensor.
If you get the part number off it, that'll help your search.
Cleaning can help but in theory, they shouldn't need cleaning because they're well protected.
With cheap £5 diagnostics, you could test it easily and quickly to save guessing as they're expensive new.

As above, get one of these and download Torque app for Android for free. You will be able to read the MAF, fuel pressure, intake air temp and many other and compare them with the normal values (normal MAF is about 3.0 at idle)

To clean it get a MAF sensor cleaner and spray inside. Check out this other video

Never buy a cheap one. Bosch only but I would suggest testing yours first as it may be ok.
A used genuine is better than a new generic copy every time and they're often cheaper. £15-20.
What engine have you got? Oragex's figure would be too low for a D5 which runs at 13g/s at idle.

Took apart this morning. Found the security screws a pain (hacksawed a slot in the screw when unit off) gave it a big spray with electric contact cleaner back together seems ok. Will see if it's done the trick. Thanks for replies.

I hope it works.
There is an irony here.
Whenever cleaning a MAF is mentioned, "Use MAF cleaner only and not contact cleaner" is shouted from the rooftops. Also, people are warned against touching it. "Let it air-dry completely" is the other command. Kira
