Default Water between outer and inner wing -XC70

Today whilst I had the bonnet up on my 2015 XC70 I peered into the gaps between the front wing and the front inner wing. The gap is just forward of the gas strut hing bolts.

By chance I saw there was water in the gap. Stuck my finger in and it covered my finger nail.

Went to the otherside found the same. The car had been washed by the dealer that same day having had some warranty work completed (In un-related areas)

Car had been driven 6 miles back with plenty of chance for it to drain.

The car was parked on my drive which is heavily sloped. Nose was in the air.

Turned the car around and the water remained.

I Poked around in the gap and found what appears to be a plastic covered foam packing piece that I managed to squeeze to one side and the water drained away.

I sprayed water onto the window allowing water to drain via the scuttle and the gaps filled up again.

I'm concerned the water remains for too long especially on the nearside where there are electrical cables running.

Has anyone had this and have remedied it? Is there a drain hole I need to clear. If so has anyone got a diagram or picture to point me in the right direction?

What is the packing piece inside?

All help appreciated.

It is possible to remove the inner wheel arch and remove the foam that way in order to give it a good clean.

...thanks tt82.

I've removed some leaf debris this morn but rain stopped play.

The foam has a clear dip in it where the water is gathering.

Is that foam simply wedged in ?

Can anyone suggest what function the foam has and whether it's important enough to leave it in place and clear the accumulated water with it there.

Sound proofing??? Might help eliminate road noise from the wheels.
